An overwhelming barrage of visual narrative can intimidate the viewer of Yellow Islands. We say let it. Embrace the feeling. Let it attack you from the off. Become submerged. As with most of the works from this exhibition it is a little difficult to say they are “enjoyable”. It is well documented that the artist was in the freefall of addiction, a freefall that unfortunately cost him his life. It is therefore impossible to not view these works without the gaze of what was to come. As you stand before Yellow Islands the gaze is constantly staring back at you, pleading in fact. The death-rattle writ large. However Yellow Islands offers something more if you let it. Through abandonment comes a grasp of the familiar. Pollock returns to his idols. Sketches of Spain – the Spain of Miro, Picasso – flash through Pollock, returning his voice. While it may be a voice of despair, it is undeniably his voice of despair. This is Pollock as more than the hideous troubled artist mythology that he helped cement. This is Pollock at his most human. Trying to remember, searching for memories of who he is, of what made him.
