Although Pollock's splatter paintings appear chaotic and random, there was a very intentional and considered approach taken, they all sit inside a neat square canvas ultimately. At first it felt wrong composing this on a computer, then I realised it was my usual approach that was wrong - so I switched off tempo, quantisation and abandoned my usual approach of using synths etc, and instead chopped up some jazz records, made new sampler instruments out of them and just improvised. Fragments of rhythm and melody happened naturally and spontaneously as I went along - but it was all done in single takes. The process was much more of a joy than usual, the end result less important - the exact opposite of my usual approach.
